The Massignano Stratotype

Pages of Rock

The Conero mountain was created by prolonged marine sedimentation that began during the Jurassic period. Mount Conero itself emerged in the Pliocene period ( 5 million years ago), taking on the form of an asymmetric dome. The presence of open, disused mines, since 1970, makes the park an “open book” on the geological history of the area and on the whole stratigraphic succession of the umbria-marches Appenines. Today the “stratotype of the Massignano” , is equipped for visitors. It is used by scientists to gather geological data and to research the reasons why dinosaurs became extinct. It would seem that research in the area has assisted in providing the proof that the extinction of the dinosaurs , 65 million years ago, was caused by a giant meteorite that hit America. Some explanation panels in the area help to explain the phenomenon.
